So what does egg donation look like anyways? If you have ever wondered what the process of egg donation in Canada looks like, you've come to the right place!
It's important to understand the process of egg donation before you make the decision to donate. Here are some of the key points in the entire journey to donating your eggs!
Our support specialists will connect with you by telephone to ask you questions about your personal health, your family’s medical history and your availability. During this call we also ensure that you are well informed about the donation process.
We add your profile to our database and will connect with you once you are selected by hopeful parents. We will always confirm that you are able to commit to their timeline and location.
You will need to begin tracking your cycle and meet with a physician. They will discuss the medical aspects of egg donation, prescribe you hormonal birth control, perform a physical exam and blood test. You will likely be tested for hormone levels, infectious diseases, genetic diseases as well as drugs and nicotine.
We will arrange independent legal representation for you. A fertility lawyer will cover all points in the legal agreement and will ensure you feel informed about the donation.
You will need to self-administer medications as prescribed by the fertility clinic and some medications are required to be injected. You will be given instructions and all of the necessary information by the clinic on how to take the medication.
On the day of your egg retrieval, you will need to take the entire day off from work or school. You will undergo twilight sedation, which is administered through an IV. The physician will use a vaginal ultrasound to guide a small needle through the vaginal wall to retrieve the mature eggs from the ovaries. You may experience some fatigue or cramping afterwards.
It’s necessary to have a companion accompany you to the fertility clinic and drive you home. You should be able to resume light to normal activities the following day.
That’s it! We here at Egg Helpers understand that the process of egg donation can be daunting, scary, and even seem intrusive. But we are here to answer any of your question, guide you through the process, and make sure you are comfortable through the whole thing!
